Are you tired of:
+ Employees repeatedly missing deadlines or being late
+ Their incessant disregard for the things you say or suggest or tried-and-true procedures and policies
+ Their endless backbiting and gossiping
My cat, Sam Hunt, LOVES my guitar case.
Each time I take my guitar out, he finds his way into the fuzzy, warm case, where he sits down and listens to my melodious guitar playing (or so I like to tell myself).
It’s definitely an inviting space for him so he takes advantage of it every chance he gets.
Your employees are no different.
They find comfort in the things that probably drive you as the owner or leader crazy.
They have always done them or they developed these habits because you didn’t address it soon enough.
Now, you — and they — think it’s too late for change.
It’s never too late for change.
I don’t want Sam Hunt in my guitar case because his fur gets on my guitar.
I learned that the third time he was inside it.
The first few times he did it, it was cute. How cute? This picture shows one of those first times.
I had to change my behavior.
It’s taken nearly a month of repeatedly stopping my guitar playing to admonish Sam Hunt and, more recently, to spray him with water.
Yesterday, he didn’t jump inside.
By changing my behavior, I was able to change his behavior.
It’s the same with employees.
You can teach them to play a different song.
First you need to change your behavior.
Yes, it can be challenging or time-consuming to change your behavior.
And it may take some time and feel awkward to change their habits.
No, it’s not impossible.
I have helped lots of leaders and owners change the tune with their staff.
What seems impossible at the beginning doesn’t have to be.
Employees value most feeling like they are contributing and knowing what’s expected of them.
Most often, employees fall into these bad habits because they aren’t being monitored.
You can change employee behavior if you are willing to set new expectations clearly and invest the time in monitoring their behavior — until the new behavior becomes practice.
What if you had someone who actually helped you find solve this challenge?
Let’s connect and discuss how that may help you get the business support you need and change that song in your office.
