One of the first jobs Bob Graham had in his youth was working as a salesperson in a Radio Shack franchise in his Calgary neighborhood. Little did he know, this part-time role would transform into a 20-year career in the retail electronics industry including 10 years managing and later owning a top 10% ranked Radio Shack franchise. After selling his franchise he began a 7-year stint with Sony Store Canada. At Sony Store he worked his way up to Regional Manager overseeing 9 locations in 3 cities. At Sony, Bob Graham taught his managers to: interpret their P&Ls, CRM methods, and an interactive 3-day sales course. Bob Graham won awards and commendations for merchandising, innovation and sales.
Bob Graham studied journalism in undergraduate and graduate school. Having served as a reporter and editor for several weekly newspapers and trade publications, and having written numerous freelance articles for the Baltimore Sun, Archaeology and other publications, he brings a journalist's keen eye and skill at asking important questions to his coaching discussions. He also isn't afraid to ask the question that most people might shy away from asking. These inquiries often spark real opportunity and change.
Bob Graham's next major achievement involved companies selling office furniture. As VP of Furniture Sales for Alberta for Corporate Express Canada, Bob Graham grew his division to the top region in Canada. He totally revamped the business format in Edmonton and then sold the national president on a nationwide conversion program. Bob Graham then became the VP of Furniture Sales for Canada and moved to head the office in Mississauga to complete the conversion work and manage the team. Bob Graham grew and aligned his 9 branch locations across Canada from $64M in sales to $89M in just 3 years, a 39% increase.
Bob Graham started his career at the age of 12 as a newspaper delivery boy. (Yes, he is that old.) Since then he has served in a number of public relations and customer service roles, giving him a unique lens with which to look at these issues. He continues to put his skills developed as a spokesman for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and public relations manager for Calvert Education Services to use for his clients. He has helped them develop public relations and marketing campaigns, and led workshops at conferences like the National Hardwood Lumber Association Annual Conference at the Future Business Leaders of America National Conference on sales and customer service.
Moving back to Alberta in 2011, Bob Graham took on the role of VP Sales for the Retail and Dealer division of Expocrete, a manufacturer and marketer of concrete hardscape products. Responsible for approximately $35M in sales for Western Canada through large retailers like Home Depot, Lowes, Home Hardware and Rona, as well as an extensive independent dealer distribution network. Bob Graham and the Expocrete executive team built up the business over the next few years with a first-year increase in Bob Graham's area of 25% and then the business was sold to construction material giant, Oldcastle.
Bob Graham has used his business experience to write two books. The first, The 55 Soft Skills That Guide Employee and Organizational Success, published in 2018, offers the first comprehensive list of the soft skills used in the workplace. Used as a textbook at some universities and colleges, the book sparked The Serious Soft Skills Podcast, cohosted with Dr. Tobin Porterfield, with whom he coauthored the book. More recently, he wrote The Renegade Way, published in 2021. The book explores how we are all carving our own unique pathway toward success. With co-founder Tom Brush, Graham created the Renegade Success Network, the Ring of Renegades Facebook Group and the Today's Antidote daily podcast.
Moving to a much larger construction product business in 2017, Bob Graham became the head of the Direct to Consumer Channel for All Weather Windows in Edmonton. Bob Graham was later asked to take on the Director of Sales role for the Dealer Channel for all of Western Canada. Bob Graham had progressively moved up at All Weather from $30M in sales responsibility to nearly $100 in two years before Oil and Gas price drops and COVID-19 issues required drastic staff reductions. It was at this point Bob Graham started Bigger Pie Strategies.
From customer service and public relations to teaching and sales, not to mention helping with exit strategies and even couples negotiating a business they own together, Bob Graham has an array of experience that he can put to work for you. Coupled with his huge network of vendors, he can help you find the freedom your business can and should be providing you.
Married since 1982, has two sons, both married, and 3 grandsons. Bob Graham spent 10 years with his wife in volunteer leadership roles with a boy's youth organization. He helped develop the winter sport of Luge in Canada in preparation for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympic Games. He was a member of the National Natural Luge team for 3 years, racing in Europe and Canada, Canadian Men’s Champion in 1986, coached young luge athletes and held various leadership roles in the Canadian Luge Association including National President. Other activities included ten years in martial arts and then another decade learning and teaching Taoist Tai-Chi. Bob Graham completed a Masters in Business Administration degree, in 2007.
